Recovery, in their own words
Clients and family members describing what changed and what helped. Names and identifying details have been altered, and every story is shared with permission.
I had told myself for years that I could stop whenever I wanted. The first thing my counsellor did was not argue with that. By the third session I had said out loud, in my own words, why I needed to stop, and that changed everything.
The family sessions were hard. My husband had to hear what the last two years had been like for me, and I had to hear that he was terrified. We now have a money arrangement that we both agreed to, not one I policed.
The urge log felt silly at first. Then I noticed every entry said "Sunday evening, alone, phone in hand". Once you see the pattern that clearly, you can plan around it.
I joined the Thursday group expecting to sit quietly. Hearing someone describe the exact thoughts I had at 3am made me realise I was not uniquely broken. I still go, eighteen months on.
What I valued most was the practicality. Blocking software, a second account my sister could see, a plan for what to do on payday. Therapy was not just talking; it was building a life that gambling could not easily get back into.
I relapsed in month seven. I was sure they would give up on me. Instead we looked at what happened, adjusted the plan, and carried on. That response, more than anything, is why I am still here.
As a mum I felt completely alone. I did not know whether paying his debt would help or make things worse. Having someone explain what actually helps, without judgement, was a relief I cannot describe.
Being able to do sessions online from my car on my lunch break meant I actually kept going. Nobody at work knew. That privacy mattered to me more than I expected.
These accounts are personal experiences, not guarantees. Recovery looks different for everyone and often includes setbacks along the way.
Your story is still being written
Wherever you are with gambling right now, the next chapter can be different. It starts with a conversation.
